I attended a workshop on bullying today at the middle school. We are in the process of implementing a new whole-school bully prevention program. One of the growing problems today is cyber bullying. A New Jersey middle schooler killed himself a few years ago partly due to being bullied on the internet.
One surprising reminder from today's session involved who the bullies are. Sometimes teachers bully other teachers. Teachers may bully students and students may bully teachers. The bully is not insecure. Bullying empowers him and surrounds him with "friends" and gives him status. Bystanders who do not do anything are actually giving tacit approval to the bully.
Bullying does not just happen on the playground. How do we empower the students to build positive relationships and say no to bullying of all kinds?
