Oops, I did it! I deleted all my photos from last weekend’s Battle Cry youth event in Detroit. I will try to get some from friends to post to this site. Check out battlecry.com soon for a highlight video.
Teen Mania hosts large stadium events around the country each year. They have a vision for radical discipleship, missions and leadership training for youth. At this year’s Detroit event, over 30,000 youth and their leaders came to Ford Field, home of the Detroit Lions, to worship, listen to speakers and enjoy concerts by popular Christian bands.
Hillsong United led worship and set the tone with a few high-energy songs Friday night. Hillsong United hails from Australia and the same Hillsongs movement that has produced Darlene Zschech and others. Ron Luce, director of Teen Mania, narrated a full-length drama about the different parts of the mind that can control a teen. Pride, imagination, depravity, intellect and testosterone tried to keep him from the Truth. When he opened his heart to Jesus, the other parts realized what they had been missing.
All big events have MCs who make announcements, introductions and fill in gaps. Daren Streblow changes one’s idea of an MC. Daren is a stand-up comedian known for his show “Bananas.” His dry humor and goofy faces kept the audience laughing all weekend.
The youth especially enjoyed the short concerts by Skillet, Ty Tribbett, Hawk Nelson, P.O.D. and Hillsong United. A few Maple City Chapel girls made the effort to snap up some Hawk Nelson paraphernalia. Based on talking to the youth and crowd participation, P.O.D. was probably the favorite. During their “Youth of a Nation” song, they invited some kids on stage to dance and enjoy the song with them.
Following Hillsong United’s concert and a final message from Ron Luce, Battle Cry ended Saturday night amidst flag bearers, streamers, pyrotechnics and glowsticks. Our group from Maple City Chapel returned at 2:30 Sunday morning tired but armed and excited to rise up and be Truth stalkers not just seekers or students.
