My home church, Tri Lakes Community Church, is observing Advent this year. Each Sunday, the entire service is centered around another aspect of Christ’s coming to earth. We remembered the “Hope for a Savior” the first week. There was a skit that focused on the birth of John the Baptist and how his life brought the hope of a Savior to come.
This week, we learned about “The Faith of a Young Mother.” Mary obeyed even though she did not understand what was coming. One of my friends from my small group portrayed Mary during one portion of the service.
In the sermon about faith Pastor Dave had a number of members in the audience try to guess the number of macaronis in a cup. Then, he had some of the same people tell them his favorite song. He asked us, “Is faith more like knowing the number of macaronis or choosing the best song?” Using examples from Hebrews 11, he showed us that he believes faith is more like the former – objective rather than subjective. We can have faith because God is faithful. I Thessalonians 5:24 says that faith is believing in God’s capacity to do what He says He will do.
I can think of another word that goes with Advent. Anticipation. I am truly anticipating each week that leads up to Christmas. Yes, He has already come and He reigns but there is great joy in remembering the wonder of His coming to earth for the first time.
