Can you s-p-e-l-l it?

Spelling. It’s amazing how many misspelled words you see even with the advent of computers and word processing. It irks me a little more than some people because I have always enjoyed spelling. In sixth grade, I advanced to a Christian schools (ACSI) national spelling bee in Washington, D.C. I think I placed 17th or something like that. I should have placed higher but I relied on my natural abilities too much when I should have been studying. I still remember that I went out on the word “pirouette”, a type of dance. Unfamiliar with the word, I added an ‘h’ between the ‘r’ and the ‘o’ as in ‘silhouette.’ It was a neat experience, though, to travel to our nation’s capital, see some sights and meet other spellers from around the country.

I believe my love for spelling has helped foster my love for writing and communication. While I don’t think I’ll ever write a book, I do enjoy writing short articles about sports, family and other interests as well as e-mails, newsletters and this blog. I have started this blog to talk about my life in a way that would help me to write creatively and about new things. Hopefully, you, the reader, find these tidbits interesting and worth reading. If I am boring you or misspelling words, please let me know. God has been blessed me in so many ways and I want this blog to be a blessing to you. Don’t be afraid to comment. I’d love to hear what you think. Please feel free to suggest improvements, too.

:) The funny thing is that I can remember that in 6th grade I was runner up in the school spelling bee. I went down on the word "grammar" which I misspelled "grammer". I was so mad that I messed up such an easy word! But, hey, I know how to spell it now!

I also remember the time we went to Washington D.C. when you were in the spelling bee. Oddly enough, what I remember was the prostitutes we saw walking the streets one night. I think it was the first time I was ever conscious of that. Isn't it strange what items stick in one's memory!
