Knights withstand charging Couriers

DEMOTTE (Sat., Feb. 10, 2007) – Senior John V. scored four of his eight points in the last 1:40, leading Covenant Christian past the Couriers 63-56.

Paced by junior forward Dan B.’s 10 points inside, the Knights blasted to a 20-4 lead with 55 seconds left in the first quarter. The Couriers found enough offense to cut the deficit to 33-24 at the half but the Knights rebuilt their advantage to 16 at 44-28 and 46-30 midway through the third period.

That’s when Courier junior Todd M. took over. Held to one point in the first two-plus quarter, the usually high-scoring forward erupted for 17 points in 8:24 to draw the visitors within 57-56 with two minutes to go on the game clock. They were unable to grab the lead as John V. got help from senior guard Sam W. whose two free throws with 22 seconds remaining wrapped up the scoring for the afternoon.

Junior forward Caleb M. added 17 to Todd’s 18 as the Couriers’ six-game winning streak ended. The Couriers (11-4) journey to White’s Institute near Wabash tonight in the first of three games against IHSAA schools this week.
