Couriers edge Eagles, fall prey to Panthers

FORT WAYNE (Fri., Feb. 16, 2007) – The Couriers outgunned the Keystone Christian Eagles 77-72 in varsity boys basketball action at Imagine Schools.

Trailing 18-14 after one period, the Couriers used a 17-9 advantage in the second quarter to grab the lead for good. The Eagles broke out for 29 fourth-quarter points but could not catch the Couriers.

Junior forward Todd M. led the Couriers with 25 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Junior guard Mike T. added 13 points and five assists while junior center Carl M. finished with 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior forward Ryan M. came off the bench to snare six rebounds.

Junior Lucas W. tallied 24 points, senior Sam W. 20 and senior Alex S. 11 for Keystone (9-10).

AUBURN (Sat., Feb. 17, 2007) – On Senior Night, the Lakewood Park Panthers handled the Couriers 70-61.

The Couriers got into the scoring column first on Mike T.’s three-point play with 7:05 left but the Panthers scored the next five and never relinquished the lead after that point. Joel K.’s three-pointer tied the game at 18 early in the second quarter but the Couriers could not get closer than four points the rest of the game.

Todd M. and Caleb M. shared top scoring honors for the Couriers with 16 apiece. Carl M. contributed 14 and Mike T. 9. Todd M. added seven rebounds and four assists. Mike T. also dished out four assists.

Six-foot-five sophomore center Tommy S. paced the Panthers with 24 points, including two treys. Jacob G., a 6’5” senior forward dropped in 21 points on 10-of-12 field goals. The Panthers (14-5) connected on 57 percent of their field goals on the night and outrebounded the Couriers 30-19.

Because of this month’s wintry weather, the Couriers (12-5) will play back-to-back games to close the regular season. The home game with LaLumiere has been rescheduled for Thursday at the LaPorte school. The Couriers wrap up the regular season at Community Baptist Friday. A game at White’s Institute of Wabash has been cancelled due to scheduling conflicts.
